We travelled to Lake Kivu for a wonderful getaway. Getting there was one thing and and the idea of a lake with a large pocket of methane trapped at the bottom just waiting to escape and wipe out all biological life every several thousand years is another. It is a very deep lake and a combination of co2 and methane and volcanic activity combine to make the lake potentially dangerous and as late as the 1980s it killed some people. The gov is trying to mine the methane and perhaps use it as an energy source. Fortunately all was quiet and lovely while we were there.
Michael is a wonderful driver as we travelled 3 1/2 hours on heavily trafficked roads...literally hundreds of people walking on both sides of a two-lane road. We rode into the evening and with a no moon 8 o'clock darkness, the people were still walking in numbers.
We arrived at our rustic hotel to a pitch dark walk (power outage)along a rocky path to our rooms. We ate roast goat skewers and French fries cooked over charcoal with candles and a fire built in a fire pit. It was on the edge of the lake and we found it very beautiful the next morning. The absolutely most wonderful experience was to hear the fishermen calling and singing in the night and into the morning. The boys loved swimming on the beach of a 1 st class hotel across the lake and we met Mimi and Cal who had brought an international guest for an overnight. ( they stayed at the nicer hotel) but I would not have traded places because we had all the charm.
