ZANZIBAR

Who would ever think that we would be on this exotic island on the other side of the world. It is such a different world in every way. First we stayed in an isolated luxury resort for three nights and days and enjoyed the beauty of the Indian ocean. The low tide left a vast expanse of ocean floor and all it's secrets exposed. The food was wonderful but David chanced drinking the tap water to take meds and ended up being violently ill for a day. We all are Musuri (sp?) meaning "well" for the next phase of the trip which is in Stone Town. This is an ancient town with tall stone buildings and very narrow walkways and corridors that are hazardous for your health: People walking on either side with bicycles and motorbikes are all competing for right of way. We are amazed at the natural gps qualities of Michael and Malachi who can find their way in the maze. We are awakened early with their call to prayer. The mosque is directly across from our bed and breakfast and the sound echoes off the stone walls. It is a good reminder to pray to my Father in worship and also prayer for you. (most of you are on my list)
This island is 95% Muslim and has just recently accepted visitors for the business. All women are covered modestly except for tourists. It's embarrassing to see what women wear (or don't) while traveling. There is a fine line, I think, between protection and oppression, modesty and individuality. People here are very friendly and make us feel welcome.
Again the history of the island is of being a center for the slave trade, so I hate to think about that. Today we are going to see a spice farm. After all, this is a spice island with cardamom, cloves and cinnamon and others. I'll let you know.
