Rwanda 3 (Dark days)

I've always tried to concentrate on the strong and courageous and self sacrificing spirits of my fellow sojourners in this life, but today we came face to face with the dark side, the pure evil, of many that take part in our humanity. In a period of 100 days, 1 million people were systematically shot or murdered and bludgeoned with machete in Rwanda 1994. Today, we visited the Rwandan Genocide Memorial, a very dignified place of remembrance. What makes it so horrifying is the personal nature of the display, and to know that most every one that we meet at Amy and Michael's has suffered loss in their family. The present president, who acts like a benevolent dictator, is of minority tribe and it is truly a miracle of God's grace that the people are living now in peace and with remarkable demonstration of forgiveness, especially in the churches. Churches are thriving as people know what it means to have a Savior that surely will make sense of all of this and to serve a God of hope, of comfort, of ultimate justice and the Presence of God in their lives. A lot of missionaries and NGOs are concentrating on discipleship with a heavenly citizenship in mind, and development-- to make a living and thrive on this earth. After today's insight into Rwanda, I'll never be the same.

  1. Very sad commentary on the human race. The existence of such evil is hard to understand. Where was God's grace when a million persons of his creation were slaughtered?

  2. my view: (since it is my blog) An age-old question about sin and suffering for sure...The mystery of God's purposes and plans for our world have apparently not been explained to anyone and are most certainly beyond my comprehension. This I know, that God himself entered into this world, shouldered sin, tasted of suffering and death and overcame it with love and grace. He,through us, can bring this truth to the world...it is a great Light, "one candle at a time".
